Bollywood, which was only meant for Romance once is now losing its romantic edge over the past few years. Not only Romantic films have failed miserably but also been criticized and trolled over various social platforms.
So,now this question is bound to be raised that why romantic films have lost its charm over the past few years?
Which is the last romantic movie that has done tremendous business in Bollywood?
"Ye Jawani hai deewani"?
I can recall this movie only as far as great business is concerned?
No doubt, movies like "Bajirao Mastani" and "sultan" have also done a good business in Bollywood but it's like once in a blue moon situation for romantic movies after "yjhd".
Sultan didn't work only upon the bases of romance but the action and star value as well. Secondly, about "Bajirao Mastani", The direction and art work of Bhansali had made it a worth watch.
But today, even the direction of Imtiaz Ali and stardom of Sharukh Khan couldn't help "jab Harry met Sejal" from failing miserably.
So what are the reasons for such major failures?
1. Experimental directors like Anurag Kashyap has changed the mindset of Indian audience through their crime thriller genre movies. Now such types of movies are apealing more to Indian youth who is tired of watching that cliche romance again and again. The awesome direction and relatablity of such movies are stealing all the audience for romantic movies.
2. The other reason is Bollywood romantic genre has failed in creating any innovation in terms of stories and screenplays. There is no new element in Bollywood romantic movies. Agreed that  "kuch kuch hota hai" and "kabhi Khushi kabhi gum" wooed Indian audience once, but that doesn't mean the same magic would work in today's time as well through the movies like "Ae Dil hai mushkil". Bollywood seriously need to work upon new ideas to re-create that old magic.
3. Unexperienced Directors like Divya Kumar Khosla by their movies like "Sanam re" and "joonuniyat" has degraded the level of Bollywood romance and viewers are now really pissed off this genre. Indian romantic content lacks maturity and logics. Not every love story work only by giving cancer (or any other serious disease) to one of the main protagonist.
4. The social environment of India has shown a drastic change in past few years. In this digital era, The life style has become very  hectic and busy. Thus, youngsters(who, now-a-days share photos of their genitals before even meeting) have no place for romance in their lives. In short, relatablity of romance has lessen drastically.
These points doesn't conclude that Bollywood is boycotting the romance genre completly.
It's just Bollywood need more innovative directors and story tellers to give this genre a fresh feel.
Hollywood Romances like "La La Land" is being loved not only in Hollywood but in Bollywood as well because of its epic music and classy direction.
Bollywood also tried to make "Jagga jasus" but that too didn't work as well due to its own flaws. Because Indian audience have become more rational, intellectual and intelligent so it's not easy to woo them with same old romance.
Since that time almost everything has changed in Indian society, why romance has not changed?
Film makers must learn that putting more sexual content in same old styles doesn't mean innovation.
To conclude, the situations are indeed grim for romance genre but skillfull Film makers with their efforts and preparation can even take the first movers advantage through understanding the need of Indian audience.
