How deeply Cinema can impact one's life?
"Cinema deeply impacts one's life", Abbas Kiarostami's masterpiece "Close up (1990)" is a classic example of this statement. This film revolves around the real life incidence of a poor man, Hossain Sabzian, who is so badly influenced by Art and Cinema. He meets a rich household and introduces himself as a famous Iranian director "Mohsen Makhmabaf" on the pretext that he wants to use them and their house for his next film.
This film very beautifully depicts how cinema has an ever lasting impact on one's life that some people actually start living in the world of cinematic fantasy only. This man, Sabzian's intentions were never to commit a fraud but he was so deeply connected with art and cinema that he used to think that Makhmabaf's movies are related to the sufferings of his real life. There's a dialogue in the film from where we can get the idea of his love/devotion for films in which he expresses his biggest wish is to make a film on his life.
Inspite of some technical problems in camera angles, this film has managed to woo the audience as rationally, he was guilty of commiting a fraud but emotionally, we can't find him guilty for what he has done as his love for cinema is true and pure.
Talking about Sabzian as an actor, he has done a very fine job in his reel as well as in his real life.
He has not only managed to impersonate Makhmabaf successfully but he has also moved the audience who could easily fall for the honesty on his face in the court room.
The best part of this witty film is it's relatablity as somewhere deep in our lives, we all are also badly influenced by the cinema that we too live in the world of cinematic fantasy that we have created for ourselves. We see ourselves in the shoes of the protagonist.
Through out the film, the audience has developed a soft corner for this poor man who has suffered alot in his life and who lives his life asif he is the protagonist of a film.
This film is surely a delightful watch. And yes! Cinema clearly has a deep impact on our lives.
